5 Minute write/talk
This reading/thinking strategy helps students activate prior knowledge or reflect on what they have just read. This strategy can also be used as assessment for learning, to guide what needs to happen next for instruction. This could be used in any subject area to check for students' understanding. The five minute time limit can help students to focus on the bigger and key ideas.
Steps:
1. Students are assigned a topic to think about or reading to complete.
2. Students are given exactly five minutes to independently write about what they know about the topic.
3. Students will then share their ideas with the rest of the class.
4. The teacher will have students hand in what they have written to be used as informal assessment for learning.
Possible Curricular Connections:
GLO 1: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
1.1 Discover and Explore
1.1.1 Explore diverse ideas to develop predictions, opinions, conclusions, and understanding.
1.1.2 Integrate new understanding with previous viewpoints and interpretations.
GLO 3: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to manage ideas and information.
3.3 Organize, Record, and Assess
3.3.2 Make notes in point form, summarizing major ideas and supporting details.
